OLD TOWN TEMECULA - CLASSICS AT TEH MERC SERIES
INCOMITATUS - CELLO SOLO
RUSLAN BIRYUKOV
HANDEL: Passacaglia
BACH: Suite No.2
CASSADO: Suite
ALI-ZADEH: Oyan!
SUMMER: Julie-O
An afternoon of the cello in its most eloquent voice. A solo recital that journeys across centuries, styles, and states of mind - where the instrument speaks with both ancient gravity and modern fire.
From the noble architecture of Handel’s Passacaglia to the introspective poetry of Bach’s Suite No. 2, the program unfolds into the vibrant colors of Cassadó’s Suite, where Spanish spirit and virtuosity intertwine. A striking turn follows with Franghiz Ali-Zadeh’s Oyan!, a work of visceral energy and haunting intensity, before the recital concludes with the electrifying brilliance of Mark Summer’s Julie-O - a tour de force of rhythm, imagination, and theatrical flair.
An entire world in a single instrument.
Classics at The Merc is a chamber recital series co-produced by the California Chamber Orchestra and Temecula Presents. We feature an individual musician or small ensemble performing a wide range of music each month. Our performers are all working professional musicians or advanced conservatory students.
The Classics at The Merc series is curated by Michael Molnau, in consultation with Artistic Director and Conductor Dana Zimbric.
Old Town Temecula’s Mercantile Building dates from the 1890s, and houses The Merc, a cabaret-style space with superb acoustics and a 1901 Steinway Model O grand piano. This venue makes for an intimate musical experience, including opportunities for the audience to interact with the performers. Wine, beer, soft drinks, and snacks are available during the performances.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students. To ensure availability, we strongly recommend that you purchase tickets in advance.
Dreimal sieben Gedichte aus Albert Girauds "Pierrot lunaire" ("Three times Seven Poems from Albert Giraud's 'Pierrot lunaire'"), commonly known simply as Pierrot lunaire, Op. 21 ("Moonstruck Pierrot" or "Pierrot in the Moonlight"), is a melodrama by Arnold Schoenberg. It is a setting of 21 selected poems from Albert Giraud's cycle of the same name as translated into German by Otto Erich Hartleben.
The work is written for reciter (voice-type unspecified in the score, but traditionally performed by a soprano) who delivers the poems in the Sprechstimme style accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. Schoenberg had previously used a combination of spoken text with instrumental accompaniment, called "melodrama", in the summer-wind narrative of the Gurre-Lieder, which was a fashionable musical style popular at the end of the nineteenth century.Though the music is atonal, it does not employ Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, which he did not use until 1921.
Pierrot lunaire is among Schoenberg's most celebrated and frequently performed works. Its instrumentation – flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano with standard doublings and in this case with the addition of a vocalist – is an important ensemble in 20th- and 21st-century classical music and is referred to as a Pierrot ensemble.

music by Turina, Higdon, Alter, del Águila, and Andrés Martín
inspired by water, color, and the world beyond
Submerged invites audiences to immerse themselves in a wide spectrum of tone colors and textures. Pieces include Turina’s shimmering Ciclo Plateresco, Jennifer Higdon’s mesmerizing Pale Yellow, Aaron Alter’s contemplative Introspective Blues #1, Andrés Martín’s powerful Synchronicity. The title piece, Miguel del Águila’s Submerged (for flute, cello, and harp), is inspired by Alfonsina Storni's poetry, and it celebrates her life, evoking the quiet, creative depths where artists retreat to dream, reflect, and begin anew.
Composers Aaron Alter, Andrés Martín, and Miguel del Águila will all be in attendance to discuss their music and creative processes.
The program culminates in a powerful finale: the unveiling of Hugo Crosthwaite’s 2025 Camarada art commission, inspired by Andrés Martín’s Tango Bajo el Agua, which will be performed alongside the artwork. This deeply personal piece explores the dual nature of water as both life-giving and potentially destructive. Martín invites us to consider a striking metaphor: if we can learn to tango underwater, we can find beauty even in the most unlikely or challenging places.
