At eighteen years of age, young cellist Ethan Zhang has already performed across the world as both a soloist and a chamber musician. Just in 2018, Zhang made his debut in New York’s Carnegie Hall and was accepted into the International Academy of Music in Italy. He has captured first prizes in numerous international competitions, including the 2017 International Lansum Festival Strings Competition in Los Angeles, California, and the 2019 International Academy of Music String Competition in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Italy. In the summer of 2021, Zhang passed the preliminary round and was accepted into the XI International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians.
Zhang is also an avid chamber musician, having played in the San Diego Youth Cello Quartet+ under the tutelage of Ruslan Biryukov for over four years and in a string quartet under the tutelage of Michael and Irina Tseitlin for two years—his ensembles have won prizes at various competitions. Additionally, Zhang has also held the position of Principal and Assistant Principal Cellist in the San Diego Youth Symphony. He has also participated in masterclasses with world-renowned musicians including Eugene Briskin, Gena Raps, and Albert Lotto.
Zhang has been learning cello for the last seven years and has studied with Ruslan Biryukov for the last six and a half. Zhang is currently a freshman at Stanford University, where he plans to study computational biology. In his free time, he is still an active musician and plays both in the Stanford Symphony Orchestra and in a string quartet. Outside of his studies and music, he enjoys rock climbing, playing badminton, and reading.
