Now in their 25th Season, The Hutchins Consort is an innovative violin chamber ensemble which performs on the rare and beautiful Hutchins violins. Fueled by the virtuosity of world-class artists, The Hutchins Consort busts through chamber music norms with an exciting fusion of diverse styles and collaborations. Their contagious joy and adventurous spirit make them a trailblazing force-- breathing new life into familiar melodies and exploring uncharted sonic territories.
Hutchins Concort - the only ensemble in the world that plays - one of a kind - new type violins designed by a NASA scientist Carlene Hutchins. About half century ago NASA tasked her with the research to discover the secrets of the awesome sound of the old Italian string instruments by Stradivari, Guarneri, and others. The research had shown that all the legends of the magical effects of secret varnish and lacker were NOT in fact the real reason for the phenomenal sound qualities of the instruments. So, based on the results Dr. Hutchins designed and manufactured a set of 8 different size instruments called “new violins family”. The size of the instruments vary from ultra small to ultra large effectively ranging from ultra sound to sub sound. And yet they all tuned to match the timbre impeccably effectively making the ensemble appear as one huge perfectly tuned 32 string instrument. A few sets were made one of which is located in Metropolitan museum in NY, another in Moscow. The ensemble performs repertoire originally composed for Hutchins Consort, as well as all kinds of arrangements. Certainly one of a kind experience not to miss!

25th season, Retrospective 1: The Early Years. Here’s what Joe McNalley, our Artistic Director, has to say about the program: "This concert takes us back to the very beginning of the Hutchins Consort, when we had these amazing new instruments, but only a precious few pieces and arrangements to play on them. Founding mezzo-violinist Kevin Connolly will be joining us as we revisit some of the most cherished pieces from those early years, including Gordon Jacob's Aphorisms and the late Fred Charlton's masterpiece, Octopus Therapy."
If you love our unique, virtuosic and fun-loving concerts (and love a good deal) you can enjoy this concert, plus 3 more with a Concert Season Subscription!
TIX: General: $40, Senior/Student: $25, Youth (17 and under): $10. Family bundle also available.
