Aram Khachaturian wrote his Cello Concerto in E minor in 1946 for Sviatoslav Knushevitsky. It was the last of the three concertos he wrote for the individual members of a renowned Soviet piano trio that performed together from 1941 until 1963. The others were: the Piano Concerto for Lev Oborin (1936); and the Violin Concerto for David Oistrakh (1940).
Although the last written of the three, the Cello Concerto was the first one Khachaturian had considered writing, when he was a cello student at the Gnessin Institute.
The work was premiered on 30 October 1946, in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, with the dedicatee Sviatoslav Knushevitsky as soloist. The conductor was Aleksandr Gauk.
The Cello Concerto is the least known of the three concertos, and has not entered the core repertoire of cellists in the way the other two have for pianists and violinists, despite its difficulty level being comparable to the piano and violin concerti. It has received relatively few recordings.
The work is said to echo Khachaturian's painful experiences of war-time. It contains many allusions to folk material and dance rhythms such as the ashoug. It has been described as more of a symphony with cello than a cello concerto.
The three movements are:
The opening movement contains sections of a brooding quality, and even quotes the Dies Irae. It is rhapsodic and changeable in its moods. It contains a lengthy cadenza but has little by way of thematic development.
The central Andante has been described as 'introspective and melancholy', 'nocturnal and seductive', 'dramatic and stern', and 'menacing, oriental and melismatic'.
The third movement is full of bustle and tension. However, its energy level decreases until just near the end, when it concludes with a fast coda.
The work was one of the reasons Khachaturian was ousted from the Composers Union, and he and other Soviet composers were denounced for formalism in the Zhdanov Decree of 1948.

Crafted in the aftermath of World War II, Aram Khachaturian's "Cello Concerto in E-minor" embodies a poignant narrative, intricately woven with historical significance and artistic brilliance. Despite enduring the tumultuous currents of political adversity, this masterpiece stands as a testament to resilience and creative genius. Premiered with resplendence and fervor at the Moscow Conservatory, the concerto embarked on a journey fraught with both adulation and contention.
Conceived a mere year following the cessation of World War II, Khachaturian's “Cello Concerto in E-minor” faced a tumultuous fate amid the political upheaval of its era. Standing shoulder to shoulder with luminaries such as Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Kabalevsky, Khachaturian bore the brunt of accusations of “formalistic tendencies” – a nebulous charge wielded by those in authority within the Soviet cultural sphere. This era of persecution cast a pall over the livelihoods of these esteemed composers, revealing the capricious nature of state propaganda.
The concerto's unveiling marked a pivotal moment, underscoring Khachaturian's expulsion from the Composers Union alongside other Soviet composers, all denounced for their alleged formalism in the "Zhdanov Decree" of 1948. Thus, the journey of Khachaturian's masterpiece reflects not only artistic triumph but also the tempestuous currents of political adversity that defined its time.
Khachaturian's concerto, though lesser-known compared to its counterparts, bears the weight of profound emotion and cultural resonance. Its three movements unfold like chapters in a captivating saga, echoing the composer's personal reflections and wartime tribulations.
The Allegro moderato, with its brooding motifs and fleeting melodies, sets the stage for a journey of introspection and discovery. The Andante sostenuto, steeped in melancholy and nostalgia, invites listeners into a realm of profound contemplation and emotional depth. Finally, the Allegro, pulsating with energy and tension, captures the essence of resilience and defiance in the face of adversity. Its triumphant conclusion reverberates with the spirit of hope and renewal, transcending the boundaries of time and space.
The program will also feature Dvořák’s 9th Symphony and the enchanting "Lakmé" duet. We invite you to partake in this musical banquet of historic significance!

Now in their 25th Season, The Hutchins Consort is an innovative violin chamber ensemble which performs on the rare and beautiful Hutchins violins. Fueled by the virtuosity of world-class artists, The Hutchins Consort busts through chamber music norms with an exciting fusion of diverse styles and collaborations. Their contagious joy and adventurous spirit make them a trailblazing force-- breathing new life into familiar melodies and exploring uncharted sonic territories.
Hutchins Concort - the only ensemble in the world that plays - one of a kind - new type violins designed by a NASA scientist Carlene Hutchins. About half century ago NASA tasked her with the research to discover the secrets of the awesome sound of the old Italian string instruments by Stradivari, Guarneri, and others. The research had shown that all the legends of the magical effects of secret varnish and lacker were NOT in fact the real reason for the phenomenal sound qualities of the instruments. So, based on the results Dr. Hutchins designed and manufactured a set of 8 different size instruments called “new violins family”. The size of the instruments vary from ultra small to ultra large effectively ranging from ultra sound to sub sound. And yet they all tuned to match the timbre impeccably effectively making the ensemble appear as one huge perfectly tuned 32 string instrument. A few sets were made one of which is located in Metropolitan museum in NY, another in Moscow. The ensemble performs repertoire originally composed for Hutchins Consort, as well as all kinds of arrangements. Certainly one of a kind experience not to miss!

Demystifying art and music.
Why do artists seem a bit unusual, and how do you become one?
Let's define Art and explore the essence of Music.
Ruslan Biryukov holds a unique distinction as the only cellist globally with US commercial pilot licenses and certified flight instructor licenses. With over 25 years of teaching experience spanning the realms of arts, music, and aviation, he currently serves as the Principal Cellist for the Temecula Valley Symphony and Huntington Beach Symphony Orchestras in California. A distinguished alumnus of the Moscow Conservatory and USC Thornton School of Music, Ruslan draws inspiration from the rich traditions of the 20th century, mentored by musical luminaries like Rostropovich, Starker, Schoenfeld, and others. As the visionary founder of the Glendale Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles Cello Quartet, Ruslan excels as a prolific pedagogue.
His students have achieved remarkable success, accumulating over 500 awards in various competitions worldwide. Notably, his flight students have gone on to work for major airlines and the US Air Force. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
