Composers Circle Art Commission - Hugo Crosthwaite
Explore the edges of emotion in the music and art of Mexico
This program includes Gabriela Ortiz's emotive A Pepe from Exilios for flute and string quartet, José Rolón's lush Cuarteto Romantico for violin, viola, cello, and piano, and three pieces by resident composer Andrés Martín: the virtuosic Noche de Alebrijes for double bass and piano, Pegasus for flute, violin and double bass and the mystical Ritual for string quintet. Classical Mexican chamber music is not complete without the guitar, and guitarist Fred Benedetti will dazzle on Leonardo Coral’s serene White Cedar for solo guitar and Ortiz's playful De Ida Y Vuelta for flute and guitar. As an exciting cap of the evening, the new commission by the celebrated Mexican artist Hugo Crosthwaite will be unveiled. You don’t want to miss this Mexican musical journey infused with a enriching visual element.

«Hot and intense playing...» – Los Angeles Times
Audiences and critics alike praise Los Angeles Cello Quartet (LACQ) for its unique energy and commitment to performing.
A Musical Journey Across Time and Cultures
This program is designed to transport listeners on a journey through time and across continents, from the ancient echoes of pre-Renaissance music to the electrifying sounds of late 20th-century rock. The evening opens with Five Medieval Armenian Chants – Prayers, a collection of haunting melodies composed by anonymous musicians long before the advent of standard notation. Performed by a quartet of cellos, these chants evoke the profound spirituality of early church services, with the cello’s voice being the closest to the human soul.
The program then moves to the Romantic era of the 19th and early 20th centuries, featuring an original cello suite by the renowned Bohemian cellist David Popper. Popper’s legacy includes his infamous 40 Studies of the Highest Difficulty, known to cellists worldwide as the "bible" of technical mastery.
The energy shifts as we dive into a sparkling medley that intertwines the iconic hits of Queen, ABBA, and George Michael, seasoned with the authentic flair of Klezmer music. And as a delightful finale, we serve up a medley of timeless classics from The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel—a true feast for the senses.
PROGRAM:
3. David Popper (1843 – 1913): Suite for 4 celli, Op.16
4. 60s Pop Medley
5. 90s Rock Medley

Hutchins Concort - the only ensemble in the world that plays - one of a kind - new type violins designed by a NASA scientist Carlene Hutchins. About half century ago NASA tasked her with the research to discover the secrets of the awesome sound of the old Italian string instruments by Stradivari, Guarneri, and others. The research had shown that all the legends of the magical effects of secret varnish and lacker were NOT in fact the real reason for the phenomenal sound qualities of the instruments. So, based on the results Dr. Hutchins designed and manufactured a set of 8 different size instruments called “new violins family”. The size of the instruments vary from ultra small to ultra large effectively ranging from ultra sound to sub sound. And yet they all tuned to match the timbre impeccably effectively making the ensemble appear as one huge perfectly tuned 32 string instrument. A few sets were made one of which is located in Metropolitan museum in NY, another in Moscow. The ensemble performs repertoire originally composed for Hutchins Consort, as well as all kinds of arrangements. Certainly one of a kind experience not to miss!
